Going the extra mile.

Overall experience with state bicycle was excellent. Defenilty the best customer service experience I've have in years at any business. First off I accidentally went to the corporate location. But that didn't stop the team from helping me out. I was quite surprised how fast they all jumped off there corporate duties to make sure I got what I needed. They installed new front breaks within a few minutes and also noticed some safety concerns with my bike and referred me down to the bike shop. They even contacted the shop to let me know I was coming. At the shop I told the GM how awesome they are and how bad my service has been at other shops in the past. Not only did he apologize for the bad service I had at other shops he also hooked it up with other minor repairs and adjustments for my past troubles. Thanks for giving me the VIP treatment.

Two different brake levers?

Brakes are of decent quality. About what you would expect for $45.00. Nothing to write home about, but not bad. Two weird elements about this order is that the brakes have duct tape on them for some reason, and I received two completely different brake levers that are dissimilar in design. Not really a problem, but kind of weird. I feel mediocre about this purchase.

Front Brake set

So I purchased the ranger 2 years ago and I love it! State bike is by far the best company out there when it comes to affordable great quality bikes! I recently updated to bars that were 31.6 and I saw on the site they only had the smaller stock size brake clamp, so I chatted with James T that told me they had them in stock and to place the order and then let them know and they would change it to the brake set I needed. Not only were the brakes only $25 (the best price anywhere) and had free shipping that I received in 2 days across country, but they are great brakes that I've already had and know they will be good for me. James T did a great job and states chat box is the best out there because they are always there to help. Conclusion is when in doubt go with state because you will be happier you did and it's good to know it will be done right! I'm a salesman and I wish I sold state because it sells itself!

Shipped So Fast

I ordered these brakes, some stickers, and spacers from State and it shipped SUPER fast. If only other companies could have this type of promptness when it comes to shipping and customer service.

I only ever use a front brake, so this is perfect

Brakes work great and reasonable price! I only ride with a front brake, so I loved it that I could just buy it without having to get a front a rear set!

Brakes and Brake Levers

Bought these so I could swap Bullhorns onto my Beorn Core Line. They fit the bars perfectly, had to improvise a little with placement on the bars for the cable lengths to work, all worked out just fine. I ended up using the original brakes though as I felt they fit the frame better.

State Bicycle Co. - Flat Bar / Riser Bar - Lever & Caliper Rim Brake Set
Bike Brakes

Made by Radius Brake
199196013

or
Pay Per Month

A complete rim brake set — levers, calipers, and cables — for flat and riser bar builds.

Dual-pivot forged alloy calipers front and rear, paired with matching alloy levers and everything you need to hook them up. Available in black or silver.

This is a full replacement set, not a caliper-only kit. If you're rebuilding a bike, converting a cockpit, or replacing a tired set of brakes, everything comes in the box.

What's included

  • Front and rear dual-pivot forged alloy calipers
  • Left and right brake levers
  • Brake cables

Why dual-pivot

A single-pivot caliper rotates around one central bolt, which means one arm does most of the work and the pads wear unevenly. A dual-pivot design gives each arm its own pivot point, so both sides close on the rim with equal force.

The practical result is more stopping power for the same hand effort, better centering that stays centered, and pads that wear evenly instead of one side going first.

Forged alloy rather than cast — stiffer arms mean less flex under hard braking, so more of your lever pull goes into slowing the bike instead of spreading the caliper.

Choose your clamp size

This is the one thing you have to get right. The clamp size refers to your handlebar diameter where the lever mounts — not the stem clamp, and not the bar's widest point.

22.2mm
  • Flat and riser bars
  • 6061 Black Label v2
  • 4130 SS/FG, 2022 and newer
  • 6061 v3 Track and Titanium Track
  • State models with "wide risers"
23.8mm
  • Core Line models manufactured after September 2019
  • 4130 Fixed Gear / Single Speed, pre-2022
31.8mm
  • Drop bars
  • Undefeated Series
  • Black Label Series compact drop handlebar
  • 4130 SS/FG 2022+, 6061 v3 Track and Titanium Track on drop bars

Not sure which you need? Measure the bar with calipers where the lever will clamp, or check your bike's user manual. If you'd rather not guess, contact us with your model and year and we'll tell you.

Choose your clearance

Caliper reach determines how large a tire the brake can clear. Three options, and the difference is the distance from the mounting bolt down to the pads.

Standard Clearance — up to 28c
  • Black or silver
  • The correct choice for most State builds on traditional road and track tires
Medium Clearance — up to 40c
  • Black only
  • Longer reach for wider tires
  • For 6061 v3 Track and Titanium Track frames only — the reach is matched to those two frames, not a universal long-reach caliper
  • 22.2mm for riser bars, 31.8mm for drop bars
Wide Clearance — up to 45c
  • Black or silver
  • The longest reach available in this set
  • For 4130 Fixed Gear / Single Speed, 2022 and newer
  • 22.2mm for riser bars, 31.8mm for drop bars

Reach has to match your frame, not just your tire. A caliper with more reach than your frame needs will sit too low on the rim; one with too little won't reach the braking surface at all. If you're unsure, tell us your model and year.

Quick reference

  • 6061 Black Label v2 — 22.2mm, Standard clearance (28c)
  • 4130 SS/FG 2022+, riser bars — 22.2mm, Wide clearance (45c)
  • 4130 SS/FG 2022+, drop bars — 31.8mm, Wide clearance (45c)
  • Core Line, after Sept 2019 — 23.8mm, Standard clearance (28c)
  • 4130 Fixed Gear / Single Speed, pre-2022 — 23.8mm, Standard clearance (28c)
  • Undefeated Series — 31.8mm, Standard clearance (28c)
  • Black Label compact drop bar — 31.8mm, Standard clearance (28c)
  • 6061 v3 Track, riser bars — 22.2mm, Medium clearance (40c)
  • 6061 v3 Track, drop bars — 31.8mm, Medium clearance (40c)
  • Titanium Track, riser bars — 22.2mm, Medium clearance (40c)
  • Titanium Track, drop bars — 31.8mm, Medium clearance (40c)

Installation

Straightforward for anyone comfortable with basic cable work, but two things matter more than people expect.

Center the caliper before you set the cable. A dual-pivot brake that isn't centered will drag on one side no matter how well the cable is adjusted. Squeeze the lever, hold it, then snug the mounting bolt so the caliper settles centered on its own.

Set pad height and toe carefully. Pads should contact the braking surface squarely, fully on the rim and well clear of the tire. A pad riding high enough to touch the tire sidewall will cut through it.

Cut housing to length and cap the ends. If you aren't set up for cable work, this is a quick job at any shop.

Please contact us, consult your bicycle's user manual, or check with a professional bicycle mechanic to ensure proper fit. Clamp size and caliper reach both have to match your bike — a brake set that doesn't fit can't be made to fit.
